Hennef: Sieg Valley, Geistingen Old Town, and the Rhineland's Eastern Garden City
Hennef an der Sieg has a population around 48,000 and lies on the Sieg river in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis of Nordrhein-Westfalen, about 30 kilometres southeast of Bonn. The municipality stretches from the Sieg valley into the wooded hills of the Bergisches Land. Geistingen, the historic core, retains older buildings around the Marktplatz. The Allner See, a lake created from a former gravel pit, provides recreation. The Sieg itself is popular for canoeing. Hennef sits at the junction of the Sieg valley railway and the road towards the Bergisches Land. Siegburg, with its ICE station, is 10 kilometres west.
