Herdecke: Hengsteysee and Harkortsee Dam Lakes, Ruhr Valley Crossing, and the Small Town Between Dortmund and Hagen
Herdecke has about 25,600 residents and lies at the junction of the Ruhr and its Hengsteysee and Harkortsee reservoirs in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The two dam lakes, one on each side of the town, provide sailing, rowing, and shoreline walking. The Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus, a hospital with both conventional and anthroposophic medicine, has a regional reputation.
Dortmund is about 10 kilometres north. Hagen lies directly to the south. Wetter is adjacent to the west. Witten is to the east. The Ruhr valley here cuts through steep hillsides. The Ardeygebirge ridge runs north of the town. Herdecke's position between two larger cities gives it a commuter character.
