Huerth: MMC Film Studios, Lignite Legacy, and Cologne's Southwestern Media Suburb
Huerth has a population around 55,000 and lies directly southwest of Cologne in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The MMC Studios (formerly MMC Coloneum), one of Germany's largest television production facilities, produces game shows, talk shows, and entertainment formats. The town's history is tied to the Rhineland lignite mining industry; the former Knapsack chemical works (now Chemiepark Knapsack operated by Yncoris) grew from mining-related chemistry. Huerth consists of multiple formerly independent communities merged in 1933, including Hermuelheim, Efferen, and Berrenrath. The Otto-Maigler-See, a former mining lake, provides bathing.
