Kleve: Schwanenburg, Joseph Beuys, and the Niederrhein's Dutch Border Town
Kleve has a population around 49,000 and sits on a glacial moraine ridge overlooking the Niederrhein floodplain in Nordrhein-Westfalen, directly at the Dutch border. The Schwanenburg, a medieval castle on the ridge, gave rise to the Lohengrin legend of the Swan Knight. The Baroque gardens designed by Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen, including the Amphitheater and the Forstgarten, were among the most ambitious in the 17th-century Rhineland.
Joseph Beuys grew up in Kleve, and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve, housed in a former spa building, shows his early works alongside contemporary art. The Tiergarten, a deer park below the Schwanenburg, provides walks. The Dutch city of Nijmegen is 15 kilometres west. Cross-border shopping and commuting are daily routines.
