Lage has a population around 34,900 and lies in the Werre valley in Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Nordrhein-Westfalen, about 10 kilometres east of Detmold. The Zuckerfabrik Lage (sugar factory) was a major employer until its closure. Brick production from local clay deposits was historically important, and the Ziegelei Lage open-air museum preserves a ring kiln and documents the industry.
The Werre river runs through the town. The Lippe region's rolling landscape provides agricultural surroundings. Detmold, seat of the Kreis Lippe administration, is nearby.
