Lemgo: Hanseatic Witch Trial Town, Weser Renaissance Architecture, and Lippe's Cultural Heart
Lemgo has a population around 41,900 and lies in the Lippe district of Nordrhein-Westfalen, about 80 kilometres southwest of Hannover. The town was a member of the Hanseatic League and retains one of the best-preserved collections of Weser Renaissance buildings in Germany. The Hexenbuergermeisterhaus (Witch Mayor's House), a richly carved stone building from 1571, takes its name from Mayor Hermann Cothmann, who conducted numerous witch trials in the 17th century.
The Junkerhaus, built by the eccentric artist Karl Junker between 1889 and 1912, is an entirely hand-carved wooden house filled with obsessive ornamentation. The Engelbert-Kaempfer-Museum honours the Lemgo-born physician and naturalist who coined the word "Shogun" and first described Japanese culture for European readers. The Marktplatz, with the Rathaus and Nikolaikirche, forms the medieval centre. The Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe has a campus here. Detmold is about 10 kilometres south.
