Lengerich at the Teutoburg Forest Edge in the Muensterland
Lengerich has about 22,700 inhabitants and lies at the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest in the Kreis Steinfurt of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Limestone quarrying and cement production have shaped the local economy for over a century, with the Dyckerhoff cement works operating large quarries in the surrounding hills. The Intruper Berg, a limestone ridge, offers hiking trails with views across the Muensterland plain to the north.
Osnabrueck is roughly 20 kilometres to the east. Muenster is about 35 kilometres north. Tecklenburg, with its ruined hilltop castle and open-air theatre, lies just to the northwest. The Teutoburg Forest runs east-west through the southern edge of the municipality, creating a clear topographic division between the hilly wooded south and the flat agricultural Muensterland to the north.
