Luedinghausen: Three Moated Castles, Stever River, and the Muensterland Kreis Coesfeld
Luedinghausen is unusual for a town of its size in having three moated castles within its boundaries. Burg Vischering, a classic Muensterland Wasserburg dating to 1271, is one of the best-preserved moated castles in Westphalia and houses a museum. Burg Luedinghausen stands in the town centre, and Burg Kakesbeck lies to the north. The Stever river, a Lippe tributary, flows through town and feeds the castle moats. About 24,100 people live here in the Kreis Coesfeld of Nordrhein-Westfalen.
Muenster is roughly 30 kilometres north. Dortmund is about 50 kilometres south. The flat Muensterland landscape consists of pasture, arable land, and scattered hedgerow oaks. The Muensterlaender Parklandschaft, as this pattern is called, gives the area its characteristic appearance.
Cycling is a primary mode of transport in the Muensterland, and the 100 Schloesser Route, a long-distance cycle path connecting moated castles across the region, passes through Luedinghausen. The town markets itself as the Drei-Burgen-Stadt and hosts an annual Burgfest at Burg Vischering.
