Mechernich: Roemerkanal Hiking Trail, Kakushöhle Prehistoric Cave, and the Northern Eifel Municipality South of Euskirchen
Mechernich has roughly 27,500 inhabitants and spreads across a large municipal area in the Euskirchen district of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Roemerkanalwanderweg, a long-distance trail, follows the route of a Roman aqueduct that once supplied Koeln with water from the Eifel. The Kakushoehle, a cave used in prehistoric times, lies near the village of Dreimuhlen. Lead mining in the Mechernicher Bleiberg shaped the area for centuries.
Euskirchen is about 15 kilometres north. Bad Muenstereifel lies nearby to the west. Zuelpich is to the northeast. The Eifel hills rise to the south. Koeln is roughly 50 kilometres northeast. Mechernich consists of over 40 villages and hamlets spread across rolling terrain between the Rhine lowland and the Eifel uplands.
