Muelheim an der Ruhr: Leather Industry Past, White City on the Ruhr, and a Riverside Reinvention
Muelheim an der Ruhr has a population around 171,000 and sits between Essen and Duisburg in the western Ruhr. The city was historically called the "Stadt am Fluss" because the Ruhr river runs directly through the centre, unlike most Ruhr cities where the river skirts the edge. Muelheim's Ringlokschuppen, a former railway roundhouse, is now one of the Ruhr's most respected performance venues.
Aldi Sued has its headquarters in Muelheim; the Albrecht brothers opened their first shop here in 1946 on Huestrasse. Tengelmann (now defunct) was also headquartered here. The Ruhrbania project is redeveloping the riverfront into a mixed-use area. The MPI fuer Kohlenforschung (Max Planck Institute for Coal Research), founded in 1914, continues under a different name.
