Neukirchen-Vluyn has around 28,100 residents and lies in the Wesel district of Nordrhein-Westfalen, on the Lower Rhine plain. The town was formed in 1970 by merging Neukirchen and Vluyn. Coal mining at the Niederberg colliery shaped the local economy until closure in 2001. The spoil heap has been landscaped into a walking area with views across the flat terrain.
Moers is directly to the east. Krefeld lies about 15 kilometres southeast. Duisburg is roughly 20 kilometres east. Kamp-Lintfort borders to the north. The Lower Rhine landscape here is flat agricultural land interspersed with wooded areas. The Vluyner Suedpark offers recreational green space in the southern part of the municipality.
