Neustadt/Nord is a central district of Koeln with roughly 28,100 inhabitants. The inner Gruenguertel (green belt), laid out where the medieval city walls once stood, runs through the district as a park strip. The Eigelsteintor, a surviving medieval gate, anchors the Eigelstein quarter with its mix of Turkish shops, bars, and independent restaurants. Ebertplatz, recently redesigned, connects the district to the Agnesviertel.
The Dom (cathedral) and Hauptbahnhof are directly to the south. Nippes borders to the north. Ehrenfeld is to the west. The Rheinpark and Deutzer Bruecke are accessible across the Rhine to the east. Neustadt/Nord's housing stock is mainly Gruenderzeit apartment buildings, many reconstructed after wartime destruction.
