Oer-Erkenschwick has around 30,400 inhabitants and lies in the northern Ruhr area of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Coal mining at the Ewald Fortsetzung colliery shaped the town for most of the 20th century until closure. The Stimbergpark, a large leisure and forest area on the Stimberg hill, offers recreation. The town merged from the separate communities of Oer and Erkenschwick.
Recklinghausen is about 8 kilometres south. Datteln is to the north. Marl is the western neighbour. The Haard forest, a large recreational woodland, lies to the north.
