Opladen is a district of Leverkusen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, with about 23,000 inhabitants. Until 1975, it was an independent town before being merged into the new city of Leverkusen. The railway junction at Opladen was historically important, and the former Bahnausbesserungswerk, a large railway repair workshop complex, operated here for over a century. The site has been redeveloped as the Neue Bahnstadt Opladen, a mixed residential and commercial quarter built on sustainable urban planning principles.
The Wupper and Dhünn rivers converge near Opladen. Cologne is roughly 20 kilometres south. Solingen lies to the east. The Bergisches Land foothills begin east of the district. Opladen retains its own town centre character separate from Leverkusen's Wiesdorf district, with a pedestrianised shopping street and weekly market.
