Porta Westfalica has a population around 36,400 and lies where the Weser river breaks through the Wiehen and Wesergebirge hills in Nordrhein-Westfalen. This gap, the Westphaelische Pforte (Westphalian Gate), is a major geographic landmark. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal, a colossal monument on the Wittekindsberg hilltop overlooking the gap, was erected in 1896 and restored in 2018.
The town was formed in 1973 by merging several communities along both sides of the Weser. Barkhausen, Hausberge, and Veltheim are the main settlement centres. The Jakobsberg and Wittekindsberg hills offer hiking with views across the North German Plain. The Weser cycle path passes through. Minden lies immediately to the north. Bielefeld is about 30 kilometres south. Adult companionship follows NRW standards.
