Rees: Oldest Town on the Lower Rhine in the Kreis Kleve
Rees holds the distinction of being the oldest town on the Lower Rhine, with town rights granted in 1228. About 22,540 people live in the municipality, which lies on the left bank of the Rhine in the Kreis Kleve of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The historic town wall, partly preserved with towers, and the Rheinpromenade along the river are the main features of the compact old town. The Rhine is wide here, flowing slowly through the flat Lower Rhine plain toward the Netherlands.
Emmerich am Rhein is roughly 10 kilometres northwest. Wesel lies about 20 kilometres south. Kalkar, with its late-Gothic Nikolaikirche, is nearby to the west. The surrounding polder landscape, protected by dykes, is used for dairy farming and arable agriculture. Rees functions partly as a residential community for people working in the Ruhr area and in the Dutch border region.
The Rheinpromenade sculpture park, installed along the riverbank, displays contemporary works by international artists against the backdrop of the wide river.
