Rheinhausen: Krupp's Last Steelworks, Rhine Left Bank, and Duisburg's Western Satellite
Rheinhausen is a Stadtbezirk of Duisburg with a population around 78,000, located on the left bank of the Rhine. The closure of the Krupp steelworks in 1993 after a bitter 153-day worker occupation became a symbol of the Ruhr's deindustrialisation. The Krupp Rheinhausen plant had been one of Germany's largest steel producers. The Logport logistics complex now occupies much of the former industrial site, transforming the area into a freight distribution hub.
The Toeppersee, an artificial lake created from a former gravel pit, is a popular recreation area. Rheinhausen was an independent city until 1975 when it was absorbed into Duisburg. The district retains a separate identity, particularly through the shared memory of the steel closure. The A40 and A57 motorway junction sits within the district. Rheinhausen is connected to right-bank Duisburg by the Friedrich-Ebert-Bruecke. Krefeld borders to the west.
