Versmold: Meat Industry Town in the Muensterland of Nordrhein-Westfalen
Versmold has about 21,000 inhabitants and lies in the Kreis Guetersloh of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The town is a centre of Germany's meat processing industry, with several large slaughterhouses and sausage factories based here. This concentration dates to the post-war decades when the Muensterland's agricultural surplus was industrialised. The Fuchteler Wald, a mixed forest area, lies to the east.
Guetersloh is roughly 20 kilometres east. Osnabrueck is about 30 kilometres north. The landscape is flat Muensterland with scattered farms and hedgerows. Versmold hosts an annual Schuetzenfest and several other traditional festivals.
