Waltrop has around 30,200 inhabitants and lies at the junction of the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal and the Datteln-Hamm-Kanal in Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg, an old ship lift from 1899, is now a museum of the Westphalian industrial heritage (LWL-Industriemuseum). A newer replacement lift operates beside it. Canal infrastructure and water engineering define the town's identity.
Datteln lies to the north. Castrop-Rauxel borders to the south. Luenen is to the east. Recklinghausen is accessible to the northwest. Coal mining was historically important but the collieries have closed. The town retains a mix of industrial heritage and suburban residential areas.
