Wegberg has around 29,600 residents and lies in Nordrhein-Westfalen, west of Moenchengladbach near the Dutch border. The town calls itself Muehlenstadt (mill town) for its historical water mills along the Schwalm and Beeck streams. Several restored mills survive along walking routes. The Schwalm-Nette nature park covers much of the surrounding landscape.
Erkelenz is to the south. Wassenberg borders to the west. The Netherlands are a few kilometres away. Moenchengladbach is about 20 kilometres east. The settlement consists of scattered villages rather than a single dense centre. The RAF Wildenrath airfield, now closed, was a major Cold War British military base in the area.
