Werne: Sole Thermal Baths, Sim-Jue Fair Tradition, and the Small Lippe Town North of the Ruhr
Werne has roughly 30,800 residents and lies on the Lippe river in Nordrhein-Westfalen, at the northern edge of the Ruhr area. The Sole-Therme Werne uses natural brine from underground salt deposits for thermal bathing. The Sim-Jue, a folk fair held annually since 1362, is one of the oldest fairs in Westphalia and takes place at the end of October.
Luenen is about 10 kilometres south. Hamm is roughly 20 kilometres east. Bergkamen borders to the southwest. The Lippe floodplain to the north provides open landscape. Werne's old centre has a compact market square with the Christophorus church. Former coal mining in the wider area has given way to service and light industry.
