Wuelfrath: Limestone Town Between Wuppertal and Mettmann
Wuelfrath has about 21,000 inhabitants and lies in the Kreis Mettmann of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Massive limestone quarrying operations by Rheinkalk and other companies have reshaped the landscape around the town, creating deep pits and exposing geological formations. The Zeittunnel, a museum inside a former limestone tunnel, tells the 400-million-year geological history of the deposits. The Duessel river flows through the town.
Wuppertal is roughly 10 kilometres east. Mettmann is about 10 kilometres west. Velbert borders to the north. The terrain is hilly Bergisches Land, with wooded ridges between the quarries and residential areas.
