Andernach has roughly 29,600 inhabitants and lies on the left bank of the Rhine in Rheinland-Pfalz. The Geysir Andernach, a cold water geyser erupting up to 60 metres high, is the highest of its type worldwide. It is driven by volcanic CO2 from the East Eifel volcanic field, demonstrating that the region's volcanism is not entirely extinct.
Parts of the Roman town wall survive, placing Andernach among the Rhine's oldest settlements. The Runder Turm, a 15th-century defensive tower, stands near the Rhine promenade. Koblenz is about 20 kilometres north. Mayen lies to the west in the Eifel. Neuwied is across the Rhine. The Laacher See, a volcanic crater lake, is roughly 10 kilometres west.
