The Festung Germersheim, a 19th-century Bavarian fortress complex, is one of the largest preserved fortification systems in Germany. Several of the former barracks and casemates now serve as cultural venues and a branch of the Universitaet Koblenz-Landau for translation studies. The Daimler Truck logistics centre at Germersheim is one of Europe's largest spare parts warehouses.
Speyer is about 15 kilometres north. Karlsruhe lies across the Rhine to the east. The Upper Rhine Plain here is flat and fertile, with asparagus and tobacco cultivation on the sandy soils.
