Nieder-Ingelheim: Kaiserpfalz Core District of Ingelheim am Rhein in Rheinhessen
Nieder-Ingelheim is one of the three main districts of Ingelheim am Rhein, and the site where the Carolingian Kaiserpfalz stood. Archaeological excavations have uncovered foundations of the imperial palace where Charlemagne held court and received foreign delegations in the late 8th and early 9th centuries. About 24,600 people live in this part of Ingelheim. The Sebastian-Muenster-Platz recalls the Renaissance cosmographer born here in 1488, whose Cosmographia was among the most widely read books of the 16th century.
The broader Ingelheim municipality, including Ober-Ingelheim and Frei-Weinheim, sits on the left bank of the Rhine in the Mainz-Bingen district of Rheinland-Pfalz. Mainz is about 15 kilometres east. The Rheinhessen wine region surrounds the town, and the Spaetburgunder vineyards on the slopes above Nieder-Ingelheim produce red wine unusual for this predominantly white-wine area. Boehringer Ingelheim's pharmaceutical campus dominates the northern part of the wider municipality.
