Oberhausen: CentrO Shopping, Gasometer Art, and the Ruhr's Reinvented Industrial Core
Oberhausen has a population of around 219,000 and sits in the western Ruhr between Essen and Duisburg. The CentrO, opened in 1996 on the site of a former steelworks, was Europe's largest shopping and leisure centre at the time and remains a regional draw. The Gasometer Oberhausen, a 117-metre former gas holder built in 1929, has been converted into one of Germany's most striking exhibition spaces; its shows regularly attract over a million visitors. Oberhausen was one of the first German cities to industrialise, with the Gutehoffnungshuette (GHH) steelworks operating from 1758.
The Rhine-Herne Canal runs through the city. The Ludwig Galerie in Schloss Oberhausen shows art from the Peter and Irene Ludwig collection. Oberhausen Hauptbahnhof connects to Essen in 8 minutes and Duesseldorf in 25. The city has lost over 50,000 residents since the 1960s peak.
