Every July, Challenge Roth draws thousands of triathletes and over 200,000 spectators to this Franconian district town, making it one of the largest long-distance triathlon events worldwide. Outside of race season, Roth is a quiet administrative centre of about 25,100 inhabitants. Schloss Ratibor, a Renaissance palace completed in 1536 by Margrave Georg of Brandenburg-Ansbach, anchors the old town. The Rednitz river, formed by the confluence of the Schwabach and Roethenbach, flows through the town centre before eventually joining the Regnitz system toward Bamberg.
Nuernberg is roughly 25 kilometres to the north. Schwabach, the smallest kreisfreie Stadt in Bayern, lies between Roth and Nuernberg. Hilpoltstein is to the south. The Roth district stretches across mixed forest and farmland in Middle Franconia. The Main-Donau-Kanal passes through the eastern part of the district.
