Worms: Nibelungen City, Luther's Stand, and One of Germany's Oldest Jewish Communities
Worms has a population around 81,000 and sits on the left bank of the Rhine in Rheinland-Pfalz. The city's history stretches back over 5,000 years. The Nibelungenlied, the medieval German epic, is set partly in Worms; the Nibelungenmuseum built into the old city wall tells the story. The Heiliger Sand (Holy Sand) cemetery in Worms, with graves dating to 1058, is the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in Europe. The Liebfrauenkirche, surrounded by vineyards, gives its name to Liebfraumilch wine. Worms lies between Mannheim (20 kilometres south) and Mainz (50 kilometres north) in the Rhine valley.
