Dillingen an der Donau has about 21,530 inhabitants and lies in the Landkreis Dillingen an der Donau of Bayern. The town served as the residence of the Bishops of Augsburg from the 13th to the early 19th century. A Jesuit university operated here from 1549 to 1804, and the Studienkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt, built by the Jesuits, is one of the finest baroque churches in the Danube valley. The Schloss, the former bishops' palace, stands at the centre of the compact old town.
Augsburg is roughly 45 kilometres southeast. The Danube flows just south of town. Lauingen, the birthplace of Albertus Magnus, is immediately to the west. The Donauried, a wide river floodplain, stretches to the south and east.
