Homburg: Schlossberg Caves, University Medicine, and the Saar-Palatinate Crossroads
Homburg has a population around 44,600 and lies in the eastern Saarland, close to the border with Rheinland-Pfalz. The Schlossberghoehlen, Europe's largest sandstone caves created by humans, extend beneath the ruins of the hilltop fortress. The caves were used for military storage and as air-raid shelters. Homburg's location on the old trade route between Saarbruecken and the Palatinate gave it strategic importance. The Roemer-Museum documents the nearby Roman vicus of Schwarzenacker, one of the best-preserved Roman settlements in southwest Germany. The Karlsberg brewery, founded in 1878, produces one of the region's most popular beer brands. Saarbruecken is 30 kilometres southwest, Kaiserslautern 25 kilometres north.
