Puettlingen: Former Coal Town in the Saarland's Koellertal
Puettlingen has about 21,050 inhabitants and lies in the Regionalverband Saarbruecken of Saarland. Coal mining at the Grube Victoria operated here until 1963, and the transition from mining to services and commuter-town living defined the late 20th century. The Koellerbach river flows through the Koellertal valley in which the town sits. The Koehlerhof, a former farmstead, operates as a cultural centre.
Saarbruecken is about 10 kilometres south. Voelklingen, with its UNESCO World Heritage ironworks, borders to the west. The landscape is hilly Saarland terrain, with mixed forest on the ridges and residential development in the valleys.
