Aschersleben claims to be the oldest documented town in Sachsen-Anhalt, with records reaching back to 753. About 24,900 people live in this Salzlandkreis town at the northeastern edge of the Harz foothills. The largely intact town fortifications, including towers and long stretches of wall, date to the 15th century. The painter Neo Rauch, one of the leading figures of the New Leipzig School, grew up in Aschersleben, and a gallery dedicated to his work opened in 2007. Halberstadt is about 30 kilometres to the west. Quedlinburg, the UNESCO-listed Fachwerk town, lies 20 kilometres southwest.
