The town, officially carrying the Lutherstadt title, has about 22,670 inhabitants and lies in the Landkreis Mansfeld-Suedharz. Halle an der Saale is about 35 kilometres to the east. Sangerhausen lies to the west. The landscape is gently rolling, transitioning from the Harz foothills to the Saale-Unstrut lowland. Mining decline in the 1990s caused significant population loss, and the town has been adjusting its infrastructure to a smaller population since.
