Halle-Neustadt has a population around 44,500 and lies on the western bank of the Saale, directly adjacent to Halle (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt. Built from 1964 as a purpose-designed socialist residential city for workers in the Buna and Leuna chemical plants, it was briefly an independent municipality before being incorporated into Halle in 1990. At its peak in the 1980s, around 94,000 people lived here.
The district is characterised by large-scale Plattenbau housing blocks arranged around central green corridors. The Passage Halle-Neustadt serves as the commercial centre. Since reunification, significant population decline has led to large-scale demolition under the Stadtumbau Ost programme. The remaining blocks have been partly renovated. The tram system connects Halle-Neustadt to Halle's Marktplatz in about 15 minutes. The Weinbergwiesen, open meadows along the Saale, provide recreation. Adult companionship follows Saxony-Anhalt's regulatory framework.
