Koethen: Bach's Anhalt Court Years, Naumann Ornithological Collection, and the Homoeopathy Town on the Sachsen-Anhalt Plain
Koethen (Anhalt) has about 28,700 residents and lies on the flat plain of Sachsen-Anhalt between Halle and Dessau. Johann Sebastian Bach served as Kapellmeister at the Koethener court from 1717 to 1723, composing the Brandenburg Concertos during this period. The Schloss Koethen houses a Bach memorial and the Naumann ornithological collection, one of Germany's oldest bird collections.
Halle (Saale) is about 30 kilometres southeast. Dessau-Rosslau lies roughly 25 kilometres northeast. Bernburg is around 20 kilometres northwest. Koethen was one of the capitals of the former principality of Anhalt-Koethen. Samuel Hahnemann, founder of homoeopathy, practised in the town during the 1820s, and a Hahnemann memorial marks his residence.
