Magdeburg: Otto von Guericke's Vacuum, the Green Citadel, and Saxony-Anhalt's Capital
Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt with a population around 236,000. Otto von Guericke, born here in 1602, famously demonstrated atmospheric pressure with the Magdeburger Halbkugeln (Magdeburg hemispheres) experiment in 1654, using teams of horses to try pulling apart two evacuated copper hemispheres. The Magdeburger Dom, Germany's oldest Gothic cathedral, dates from 1209. The Gruene Zitadelle (Green Citadel), designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed posthumously in 2005, is one of his last architectural works.
Magdeburg was heavily bombed in January 1945, losing most of its historic centre. The GDR rebuilt it with wide socialist boulevards and Plattenbau housing blocks. The Otto-von-Guericke-Universitaet has around 14,000 students. The Elbe river runs through the city, and the Wasserstraßenkreuz (waterway junction) where the Mittellandkanal crosses over the Elbe via an aqueduct is an engineering landmark.
