Merseburg: Merseburg Incantations, Cathedral and Palace, and the Saale Town with Early German Literary Heritage
Merseburg has a population around 34,800 and lies on the Saale river in Sachsen-Anhalt, about 15 kilometres south of Halle. The Merseburger Zauberspueche (Merseburg Incantations), discovered in the cathedral library in 1841, are the only known examples of pre-Christian Germanic magic spells in the Old High German language. They date from around the 9th or 10th century.
The Merseburger Dom (cathedral) and adjacent Schloss form a monumental ensemble on a hill above the Saale. The cathedral chapter library preserves important medieval manuscripts. The Saale riverbank offers walks. Leuna's chemical industry lies nearby. Leipzig is about 30 minutes by regional train. Halle is about 15 minutes.
