Sangerhausen: Europa-Rosarium, Copper Mining Heritage, and the Mansfeld-Suedharz District in Sachsen-Anhalt
The Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen holds the world's largest collection of roses, with over 8,600 varieties across 12.5 hectares. The garden was founded in 1903 and has been expanded continuously since. Sangerhausen itself has about 23,350 inhabitants and is the seat of the Mansfeld-Suedharz district in Sachsen-Anhalt.
Copper mining shaped the wider region for centuries. The Mansfeld mining district, extending east and north of town, was one of Europe's most productive copper sources from the Middle Ages into the 20th century. The Roehrigschacht visitor mine near Sangerhausen allows access to former copper shale workings. The Kyffhaeuser hills, with the Barbarossa monument and the ruined Reichsburg Kyffhausen, rise to the south.
Nordhausen is roughly 30 kilometres to the west. Eisleben, Luther's birthplace, is about 25 kilometres northeast. Halle an der Saale lies further east. The Goldene Aue, a broad fertile valley between the Harz and the Kyffhaeuser, characterises the terrain around Sangerhausen.
