Schoenebeck: Salzelmen Saltworks, Elbe River Proximity, and the Saline Heritage Town South of Magdeburg
Schoenebeck has around 30,400 residents and lies on the Elbe in Sachsen-Anhalt, about 15 kilometres south of Magdeburg. The Solepark Schoenebeck in the Salzelmen district preserves a salt production heritage dating back over a thousand years. The Gradierwerk (salt graduation tower) still operates for therapeutic purposes. Salt and potash extraction were the economic backbone for centuries.
Magdeburg Hauptbahnhof is reachable in about 15 minutes by regional train. Barby lies downstream on the Elbe. Stassfurt is to the south, another salt-mining town. The Elbe floodplain provides wetland habitats. Schoenebeck-Salzelmen, Bad Salzelmen and Frohse are historical sub-districts. The town is part of the Salzlandkreis administrative district.
