Weissenfels: Schuehmuseum Shoe History, Duke Heinrich's Schloss, and the Saale Valley's Former Saxon-Thuringian Residence
Weissenfels has about 29,800 residents and lies on the Saale river in Sachsen-Anhalt. The Schloss Neu-Augustusburg, a baroque palace above the Saale built for Duke Heinrich of Sachsen-Weissenfels, houses the Schuehmuseum, a shoe museum documenting the town's long history of shoe manufacturing. The shoe industry was central to the local economy for over a century.
Heinrich Schuetz, one of the most important early baroque composers, died here in 1672 and his memorial house can be visited. Naumburg is about 20 kilometres south. Merseburg lies roughly 15 kilometres north. Leipzig is about 30 kilometres northeast. The Saale wine region extends southward. Novalis was born in nearby Oberwiederstedt.
