Wittenberg, officially Lutherstadt Wittenberg, has around 30,000 inhabitants and lies on the Elbe river in Sachsen-Anhalt. Martin Luther reportedly nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Schlosskirche here in 1517, launching the Protestant Reformation. The Schlosskirche and the Stadtkirche St. Marien are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Luther's house, the former Augustinian monastery where he lived, is now the world's largest museum dedicated to the Reformation.
Lucas Cranach the Elder ran his painting workshop here and his house on the Markt is preserved. Philipp Melanchthon's house is also a museum. Dessau-Rosslau is about 35 kilometres west. Leipzig is roughly 70 kilometres south. The Elbe floodplain offers cycling routes. Woerlitz and its famous landscape gardens are about 20 kilometres northwest.
