Goerlitz: Germany's Easternmost City, Undamaged Architecture, and the Hollywood of Saxony
Goerlitz has a population around 58,000 and sits on the Neisse river at Germany's easternmost point, on the Polish border in Saxony. The city escaped wartime bombing almost entirely, leaving an architectural ensemble of over 4,000 listed buildings spanning Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Jugendstil periods. This preservation has made Goerlitz a favourite film location; Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel," Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," and numerous German productions have used its streets.
The Heiliges Grab (Holy Sepulchre), a late medieval replica of Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, is unique in Central Europe. The Peterskirche houses a Sonnenorgel (Sun Organ) with a gilded sunburst above the pipes. Zgorzelec, the Polish half of the formerly unified city, lies directly across the Neisse. The Landskron brewery continues a tradition dating to 1869. Population decline since reunification has been severe but has stabilised in recent years thanks to tourism and remote workers attracted by low living costs.
