Gohlis: Schiller's Summer Retreat, Wilhelminian Villas, and North Leipzig's Green Belt
Gohlis has a population around 45,900 and forms a residential district in northern Leipzig, Sachsen. Friedrich Schiller wrote much of his Ode to Joy here during the summer of 1785, and the Schillerhaus, his former lodging, is now a museum. Gohliser Schloss, a Baroque garden palace from 1756, serves as a concert and event venue and is one of the few surviving Baroque country houses in the Leipzig area.
The northern part of Gohlis features elegant Wilhelminian-era villas and tree-lined avenues that survived wartime bombing relatively intact. The Auensee and its surrounding parkland provide recreation. Leipzig's Nordplatz and the Georg-Schumann-Strasse serve as commercial axes. Gohlis has attracted young professionals and families, and property prices have risen significantly since reunification. The Buergerverein Gohlis maintains an active civic community.
