Pirna: Gateway to Saxon Switzerland, Sonnenstein History, and Canaletto's Favourite Elbe Town
Pirna has a population around 40,300 and lies on the Elbe river in Saxony, about 30 kilometres southeast of Dresden. The Italian painter Bernardo Bellotto (known as Canaletto) painted eleven views of Pirna in the 1750s, documenting the town's baroque Altstadt in remarkable detail. Many of the buildings he captured still stand. The town markets itself as the "gateway to Saxon Switzerland" (Saechsische Schweiz), the sandstone mountain region that begins directly to the south.
Festung Sonnenstein, a fortress above the town, has a dark history: during the Nazi T4 programme, over 13,000 disabled and mentally ill people were murdered here between 1940 and 1941. A memorial documents this. The Marktplatz, with the Rathaus and the Marienkirche, forms a well-preserved Renaissance ensemble. The Elbe provides boat connections to Dresden. Pirna's Geibeltbad is a modern swimming complex. The Bastei sandstone bridge and the Koenigstein fortress are short drives away. Adult companionship follows Saxon regulatory standards.
