Plauen: Spitzenstadt, Vogtland Capital, and Saxony's Lace-Making Heritage
Plauen has a population around 66,000 and lies in the Vogtland region of southwestern Saxony, near the Czech and Thuringian borders. The city became world-famous for Plauener Spitze (Plauen lace), machine-made embroidered lace that dressed European aristocracy and fuelled an industry employing tens of thousands in the early 20th century. The Spitzenmuseum documents this heritage. The Friedensbruecke, a masonry arch bridge over the Syrabach valley, is one of the largest of its type in Saxony.
The Vogtland, a hilly region straddling four German states and the Czech Republic, gives Plauen a border-region character distinct from the Saxon lowlands. The Alte Elsterbruecke, dating to around 1244, is one of the oldest stone bridges in Saxony. Plauen was a centre of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution; mass demonstrations here on 7 October 1989 preceded the larger Leipzig protests.
