Werdau sits on the Pleiße river in the Zwickau district of Sachsen, roughly 10 kilometres east of Zwickau. About 24,400 people live here. Like many towns in this part of Sachsen, Werdau's economy was shaped by textile manufacturing, particularly weaving and spinning, from the 18th century onward. The DDR period saw nationalised production continue in large state-owned enterprises, most of which closed after reunification.
The town centre features a mix of Gruenderzeit buildings from the industrial boom years and postwar reconstruction. The Stadtkirche St. Bonifatius dominates the Markt. Crimmitschau lies to the northeast, Greiz to the south across the Thueringen border. The terrain is gently rolling, part of the Erzgebirge foothills, with mixed farmland and woodland.
