Zwickau: Trabant Factory, Robert Schumann, and Saxony's Automotive Heritage City
Zwickau has a population around 99,000 and lies on the Zwickauer Mulde river in southwestern Saxony. The Trabant, the GDR's iconic two-stroke car, was manufactured here at the Sachsenring plant from 1957 to 1991. Volkswagen took over the site and now produces electric vehicles, including the ID.3 and ID.4, making Zwickau a centre of Germany's electric mobility transition. Robert Schumann was born at Hauptmarkt 5 in 1810; the Robert-Schumann-Haus documents his life and music.
The Dom St. Marien contains a late Gothic altarpiece by Michael Wolgemut, Albrecht Duerer's teacher. The Priesterhaeuser (Priests' Houses), dating to 1264, are among the oldest residential buildings in Saxony. The August Horch Museum documents the history of Horch, Audi, DKW, and Wanderer, the four companies that formed Auto Union in Zwickau in 1932. The city was heavily industrialised under the GDR and has lost around a quarter of its population since reunification.
