Schloss Ahrensburg, a white Renaissance manor house from the 16th century surrounded by a moat, is the town's landmark and open as a museum. The Ahrensburg tunneltal, an archaeological site where late Ice Age reindeer hunter camps were excavated, gave its name to the Ahrensburg culture in archaeology.
Hamburg's eastern suburbs begin immediately to the southwest. Bargteheide is to the north. Bad Oldesloe lies about 20 kilometres northeast. The U-Bahn line U1 from Hamburg terminates at Ahrensburg (Ost and West stations), making it tightly integrated with Hamburg despite lying in a different federal state. The Hagen au stream runs through the town.
