Pinneberg has a population around 40,600 and lies in Schleswig-Holstein, directly northwest of Hamburg. The town is the centre of Germany's largest tree nursery (Baumschule) district; since the 18th century, the Pinneberger Baumschulland has supplied ornamental trees and plants across Europe. The Kreis Pinneberg administration is based here.
The Fahlt, a riverine wetland along the Pinnau, is a nature reserve. The Drostei, a former aristocratic manor, functions as a gallery and cultural centre. The town suffered heavy bombing in 1943 and most of the current building stock dates from the post-war era. The Pinnau river connects to the Elbe downstream. Hamburg-Altona is reachable by S-Bahn in about 20 minutes. Wedel and Elmshorn are neighbouring towns. The flat Holstein marshland stretches north and west. Adult companionship follows Schleswig-Holstein's regulatory approach.
