Greiz was the capital of the Principality Reuss Elder Line until 1918, one of the smallest sovereign states in the German Empire. That unlikely status left the town with two palaces: the Oberes Schloss on the hill and the Unteres Schloss in the valley, the latter set within one of the earliest English-style landscape parks in Thueringen. About 24,150 people live here in the Greiz district of Thueringen, on the White Elster river in the Vogtland.
The textile industry, particularly weaving, drove Greiz's economy from the 18th century. After reunification, most large factories closed, and the town has experienced significant population decline since 1990. The Vogtlandhalle, a modern congress and event venue, and the ongoing restoration of both palaces represent efforts to develop cultural tourism as an economic pillar.
Plauen is about 30 kilometres to the south. Gera lies roughly 30 kilometres north. Zwickau in Sachsen is to the east. The Vogtland hills here are deeply cut by the Elster valley, creating a landscape of wooded slopes and narrow valley floors. The Goethe-Wanderweg passes through the area.
